Having surgery in this difficult time, where visitors/family are not allowed in the hospital setting as a precaution for COVID, my husband must recover in the hospital alone. My husband, not being in the medical field, gives me so much worry and concern as I am not able to advocate for my husband. Until the time when my husband called me on the phone, telling me not to worry as he is taken care of by a wonderful nurse.
Ricardo Gutierrez took care of my husband on the day of surgery. My husband told me how Ricardo patiently explained to him his plan of care, his medications, and narrated everything that he is doing inside the room. He frequently checks on him asking if he is okay. If he can get my husband anything else. If he is comfortable in his position, and if he is not, he would personally offer things that would make him comfortable such as positioning, offering warm washcloths, etc.
He made sure my husband was not in pain. He kept everything clean beyond measure to decrease infection; from the room to the sheets to his IVs. Before my husband thinks of something that he would want or need, Ricardo already has it the room and even if his shift is almost over, he would still attend to his needs. Ricardo spends time with him and never felt that he was rushing.
Ricardo's attentiveness, knowledge, and compassion gave us comfort. My husband slept well that night. Peace of mind for a wife who cannot be there by his side in this difficult time, knowing someone is caring for their loved one as if they are their own family.
Ricardo took care of him again the next day. On the second day, Ricardo gave exceptional care, care beyond what was expected or required. Ricardo truly has a genuine, kind, and compassionate spirit. He made this stressful time in our life so much better, but most importantly, he treated my husband with the utmost respect, professionalism, empathy, and kindness.
