No one plans on arriving to work fashionably late by ambulance. The morning I ended up in the ER, one of the first faces I encountered was ER Nurse, Kristen. I spent most of my time tucked away upstairs working in the clinic. Kristen knew from the few times I worked switchboard that I was not only a patient but also an employee. When looking over the requirements for The DAISY Award, Kristen hit every one of them in my brief interaction with her. She showed a passion for what she does by taking the time to keep me informed of what was going on, all while doing what she needed to get done. She displayed empathy by making herself relatable. She understood I wanted to keep my dignity. Because I might just have to pass these same people in the halls again someday. She showed me that I could trust her. By taking the time to listen to my concerns and making my voice known. I feel being a nurse is admirable in itself. Then when you throw in being an ER nurse on top of that and never knowing what might come through those doors next is even more admirable. I could tell Kristen loves what she does and is very good at it. Most importantly she displayed being selfless. I remember her taking the time to ask me if she needed to call anyone for me. This may seem standard to some. But when you think I was most likely not the only patient in the ER that morning. It just shows her selflessness to go the extra mile for her patients. It wasn't one big miraculous thing Kristen did that morning. But all the little things she did that go unnoticed by most. All those things or bedside manner as most people say, that you can't find written down in some textbook somewhere. I feel confident that if I or a loved one would ever be in a scary situation. That there are people such as Kristen there ready to give the best care to their patients.
