I have been an RN for 35 years; I started back when nursing was a calling and not a job. I have been cared for by both very caring, dedicated nurses, and those who just want to get through their shifts. Being an acutely ill, old RN (requiring frequent pain medications) can be difficult. Instead of being known by your name or your diagnosis, you're the nurse in room **. I have multiple health issues and require hospitalization 2-4 times per year. I've been greeted often with "I heard you're a nurse". Not unlike the greeting a new nurse receives in our eat our young culture. During my recent stay, all the nurses were wonderful but I was blessed to be cared for by a young RN named Angela. I have never been so impressed with the care she provided. Angie "gets it". She makes you feel like you're her only patient. Her interest in the person in the bed and her respect for my experience was outstanding. For the first time, I actually had a nurse ask for my input to work together to resolve my nursing health needs. What an uplifting and refreshing experience. She helped me mentally and physically. I pray that healthcare will grow more nurses like Angie. You can't teach compassion. Thank you, Angie, you made a miserable experience not only tolerable but pleasant. I am eternally grateful.
