I would like to thank my nurse and share my story of why this nurse is so special—I have been battling Stage 4 cancer for nearly 2 years and recently started receiving infusions for red blood cells due to my counts being low because of the treatment I was undergoing. Unfortunately, since the treatments of XOFIGA were causing the low cell counts, I could no longer receive the monthly injections to combat cancer in my bones. I had also gone through other forms of treatment that were stopped either because they were not effective or for other reasons. The low cell counts were causing me fatigue and made it hard for me to do anything without getting out of breath. Needless to say, I was feeling pretty bad for myself and wondering what was next. The first time I met Lawanda I knew she was a special person and later learned that she was also a tremendous nurse. From the first infusion, we talked like we had known each other for years and she took a genuine interest not only in my medical care but my personal life as well. She always asks about my daughters and wife and seems to remember what they are involved in better than I do. LOL! She shares stories of encouragement and we laugh at each other's stories and it just takes that burden off my mind for the few hours I spend with her each week or two. I thought maybe I got this treatment because I was an Ochsner employee, but after seeing her with her other patients, I know that is how she treats everyone. She makes her patients feel at ease, gets to know them personally, and is a blessing to them! I have been in the medical field for over 20 years and I can tell you that Lawanda is a nurse to her core. She is the nurse you want by your side when you are facing tough challenges. She is the one who will push you when you need a push or comfort you when you need comforting. I doubt she realizes it because she will tell you she is just doing her job, but she is doing so much more than that. She is changing patient's lives one infusion at a time up there in that room on the 4th floor. Thank you, Lawanda for everything that you do!!!
