It is very very difficult to place an IV in my right arm due to shy and collapsing veins. So I was more than pleasantly surprised when Caitlin did so. Did I mention that she placed an IV without the aide of warm packs, warm towels or ultrasound? And, by the way, she did it on her first attempt. A hospital stay is not my first choice of having a good time, but I am certain that it would have been a lot worse without the professional capabilities and personal characteristics of Caitlin. She has a formidable knowledge base but is not condescending. For example, she participated in numerous meetings with my two attending physicians, and always acquitted herself well, summarizing and emphasizing topics as necessary. She never shirked from any issue but is intelligently proactive. She is also excellent at co-opting her patients and advocating positive outcomes, without any pollyannaish cheerleading. (I am trying to internalize her methodology). On one occasion I recall she brought in 4 IV boluses and when she saw my face fill with sadness, sympathized and teased me with such skill that in a short period of time my mood was much brighter. PeaceHealth is my wife's and my facility of choice for our health care, mainly because of its excellent staffing. I already know that I will require additional care this year, and intend to fight tooth and nail to ensure she will be one of my nurses.
