Catherine Ramsey represents the epitome of an idyllic emergency room registered nurse. Traits she exemplified during my brother's hospital stay for acutely altered mental status were: calm amidst chaos, patient advocacy, active listening skills, rapid initiation of medical and nursing interventions. My brother presented to Immanuel's ED with acutely altered mental status. He was completely disoriented, scared, and distrusting everyone around him. He attempted to leave the ED and was verbally and physically aggressive to anyone who presented an obstacle to him leaving. Some staff wanted to let him go, not understanding the severity of his altered mental status, but not Catherine she protected him. Catherine and her skilled nursing judgment rapidly recognized that my brother could not cognitively make safe and sound decisions and she jumped into action. She was out in the parking lot helping to coax him back and her patience and compassion really shined. To say the scene was chaotic was an understatement. Once back in his ED room in leather restraints with the help of the (awesome) security team she promptly gave him sedatives to calm him down. She exhibited extraordinary clinical skills by giving him injections, starting an IV, and doing blood draws on my restless and confused brother. Her professionalism and calmness that she exuded to the entire family and staff around her were amazing. My brother is home and back to his normal self now and Catherine played a primary and integral role in his recovery that the entire family will be forever thankful for!
