As a new physician to Children's Mercy, Luz has been instrumental in making me feel welcome to the department. She is extremely knowledgeable and has assisted me on a daily basis to understand the clinic process. She provides excellent care to our patients and ensures all their needs are met including making sure families fully understand the course of action that will be taken. Luz maintains a professional attitude even if things aren't going as planned.

Luz has been a great addition to the neurology department over the past several years. She always provides nurturing support to our patients and this week in particular she helped with a parent who was having a very difficult time coping with her child's condition. We have hired many new nurses in our department over the past several months and she has been seen on numerous occasions helping them "learn the ropes" in our clinic.

Luz is an excellent nurse who provides great care for our patients. She is thorough and always on top of patient care. There are multiple situations wherein she displayed exemplary care like ensuring parent sample for genetic testing is done, going above and beyond to communicate with a Spanish speaking patient the recommendation on an urgent basis, nicely summarizing the clinic visit and going over family concerns at the discharge. She handles difficult situations with great calm and does everything with a smile.

Luz is caring, hardworking and conscientious. Nurses like Luz are the reason Children's Mercy is such a great hospital. She goes above and beyond for her patients and is always willing to help out no matter what the situation. I had a baby with epilepsy whose family is Spanish speaking only. I had important EEG results to give to them and I tried calling them several times with the help of the telephone interpreter with no luck. I told Luz about the situation and she called them multiple times until she was able to figure out that they share one phone between several family members. She got an aunt to get a hold of mom who finally called us back. She helped me explain the test results to the family, start medication over the phone, scheduled a follow up and gave mom her name so that they could reach out to her in the future to help navigate the healthcare system.

Luz was helpful in addressing a patient concern, even when this was not the patient to which she was assigned. She has also been very helpful in orienting me in clinic as I just started working here.

Luz is an outstanding nurse. She has demonstrated time and time again her dedication to her patients. Her sense of compassion is one of her greatest strengths. She has been an amazing resource for our Spanish-speaking families. I can think of one family with three members affected with severe tuberculosis, including the mother. Luz got to know each one of them personally. When they would call they would specifically ask for Luz, she would make sure that all of their needs were addressed, going well beyond addressing just their neurological needs. Luz has done this many times with my patients. I am deeply grateful for her presence in our clinic and for the gift that she is to our patients.

Luz has always been a role model in her dedication to the best practice in nursing. She is a huge advocate for her patients and always goes out of her way to accommodate whatever a busy workday throws at the clinic. She has been instrumental in implementing a lot of the LEAN processes, also she has been a key person in the success of a number of the subspecialty clinics. She is a true example of caring for patients, always trying to better her knowledge and seeking every opportunity to advance her learning. Her attention to detail is truly unmatched.

Luz is consistently empathetic, reliable, knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. Though the years, I have never seen her respond to patients negatively (despite being literally yelled at and demeaned as we know sometimes happens in frontline patient management despite our best efforts). She always tries to understand how she may communicate better and help the child. As a physician, I can trust Luz to advocate for families and give me feedback on when I perhaps need to improve or change my communication and treatment plan. She has an eagerness to learn and a natural compassion that cannot be taught. Her positive interactions with patients, families, and co-workers are infectious. She is an outstanding nursing role model, and truly, a role model for being a good person for all of us.

Luz is a smart, efficient, intelligent nurse. She is pro-active, always cares for her patients and their parents, and is a strong patient advocate. This is what she does for all our patients day in and day out, hence it is difficult to pick just one situation and talk about it.

She goes far beyond the extra mile for patients and families who need extra support or services. She is exceptionally effective at advocating for patients to maximize their care and long-term outcomes. Patients whom she has helped in the past often ask to see her when they are in for a clinic visit. She is phenomenal and brings so much to our clinic.
