Working in the medical field, I have found that it is not often you get the right combination of intelligence, bedside manner, and compassion in your providers. I want to thank Vincent Fiorella, RN for having all three. When my grandfather landed in the CV step-down unit with a chest tube post-fall, we were all scared. At 96 years old, the potential complications were endless. Eventually, over the course of five days, he was placed on hospice and passed away surrounded by loving family. I know that there are not a lot of hospice patients that are on the floor where he works and it was an unusual circumstance for all of the staff. He displayed grace and empathy that made our stay there a little bit easier. He was diligent, knowledgeable, and thorough in his care. He exhibited excellent teamwork skills by asking questions of the hospice nurse when it was needed. Knowing that we were suffering, he was kind and respectful. I will never be able to put into words the gratitude I feel for that moment after my grandfather passed and Vincent was there with me.
Sharing emotions with family members of patients is a hard, inconvenient part of nursing, but it is invaluable. Being vulnerable and open reminds family members that they truly care and they are not alone through the suffering. We will never be able to adequately thank Vincent for all the support he provided, but an acknowledgment of his hard work is a start.
