Erin is an excellent nurse. She is a true patient advocate. Erin took care of a deaf patient. He was going to have open heart surgery. This young man did not know sign language but could read and write. He was given a clipboard with pens to communicate. Erin could not use the Martti for teaching, so she decided to think of other actions to help her patient. She took the time during the busy shift to watch the open-heart video, type the whole video out and then present the content to her patient. Erin's topics included prior to surgery, off to the OR, and after surgery. Erin answered his written questions. This action that Erin took decreased the patient's fear and anxiety. His open-heart surgery was successful, and he was discharged home.
