My sister was admitted after experiencing side effects from a bronchoscopy. Meka was her nurse on I believe, Wednesday night and she was so sweet, very respectful of my sister, and wasn't at all bothered by my questions or concerns. She was gentle with how she handled my sister and was very helpful in explaining to me everything going on with her.
As her health deteriorated, I knew I had some decisions to make. Wanting to honor her wishes of not dying in a hospital, or being on life support, I did not see a pathway home for her, so I reached out to hospice. Dr. B supported my decision and worked with hospice to develop a plan that would give me the best chance of honoring her wishes, even though there was no guarantee she would make it home.
With plans in place for Saturday morning, Meka was again my sister's nurse. She stepped in that morning to not only comfort my other sister and me but to take the lead of orchestrating, beautifully, my sister's transfer home. She worked with such respect, alongside the hospice RN's, to make the transition as smooth as possible. It wasn't until later that day that I was told she'd only been a nurse for 1 year. I thought it was a mistake. I've been in medical since 1993, and I have never encountered such a new nurse, that showed the level of wisdom, compassion, and poise, as this young lady did. I will never forget her!
I am happy to report that we did, in fact, make it home with my sister, and she was never in any distress. So sweet and peaceful, she knew she was home and surrounded by all her family. Thank you, Meka, for taking such a sad situation and making it easier for my family.
Meka also showed exceptional compassion and diligence making multiple phone calls respiratory, transport and hospice to carefully coordinate when to remove the breathing tube (extubate) seconds prior to moving her onto the transport stretcher. One of the final acts prior to this movement was to say a prayer with the family. Praying for safe travels and a peaceful passing in her own bed which was her last request.
