Melissa goes above and beyond for the patients that she cares for. I have been constantly in awe of how caring she has been to several of our little patients and their families. There are many examples that show what a big heart Melissa has. Recently she picked up a night shift for the unit just to provide continuity of care to a mother that was losing her child. This mother came from another country and had no family to support her at the bedside during the most difficult time of her life. Melissa spent so many long shifts caring for her son that she developed a very compassionate relationship with this mother. After the death of her child, Melissa made a beautiful picture canvas of her child for the mother to have. This was an emotional gift and left me speechless. The mother expressed her gratitude and was so thankful for the care that Melissa provided. It is amazing that a mother can lose a child and still be thankful for the care provided.
In another example, Melissa had recently been caring for a child that has been in the unit for the last two months. The day of the child's tracheostomy placement, Melissa came to the unit on her day off to visit and support the family. Melissa did not come empty-handed. She had made the family all shirts, similar to the 'Stay Strong' shirts you see many families wearing. The family was amazed by Melissa and could not believe she took the time on her day off to do this. These are just a few examples of how caring and generous Melissa. She truly invests in our patients and their families and exemplifies what it means to care. Melissa is always looking for ways to make it easier for her patients and families.
Melissa, thank you for sharing your many gifts with us at Wolfson. Congratulations, you make us proud!
