My mom had a bilateral stroke while in ICU. Prior to that, she was active, driving, square dancing weekly, shopping, cooking, doing everything. Then she fell asleep for 23 1/2 hours and when she awoke, she could not speak, walk or eat. Of course, as a family, we were shocked. But even before she awoke, Valerie said: "We don't know yet". She showed us how to clean Mom's mouth, but more than that she encouraged us to stimulate Mom. When her grandson heard "have her touch different things and look at them", he took out his keys and an In and Out gift card, and Valerie brought a cup, spoon, fork, cotton balls and more. Her grandson helped her to raise the cup to her mouth, and then she did it alone. He showed her a picture book with family photos. He had her open and close the book. We were so encouraged. Valarie suggested doing routine things she was used to doing, like combing her hair in the morning, putting in hearing aids and glasses on, taking them off. Everyone here has been so attentive, but Valarie's suggestions and Mom's response to these activities brought us hope, and we still see Mom improving after 11 days.
