Robert was my fiancé's nurse his first and last two nights in the CVICU. The night is still a blur, but I do remember Robert. He immediately demonstrated his care and compassion for both my fiancé and me, as well as my family. He gracefully answered many questions posed to him and provided a comfort that allowed us to go home and rest that first night after such a tragic day. He was thorough and kind with descriptions and explanations, allowing me to better understand this new journey.
During the first two nights, we were blessed to have Robert assigned as his night nurse. Again, the security I was able to feel, knowing Robert was providing the care, was a huge relief. The second to last night, the respiratory therapist began a painful treatment. When Robert found out, he immediately provided needed pain treatment and positioned him, so he was more comfortable before the treatment was conducted.
The last night of my fiancé's life, Robert was there with my family, me, and him. He was diligent and made sure he didn't suffer pain. Robert was generous enough to explain and re-explain to us, the various elements the doctors had shared with me, helping me to better understand and indirectly, making me feel more comfortable about honoring his wishes to not be on life support.
My fiancé was blessed, as was I, to have such a caring, compassionate, giving person provide him with end-of-life care. I will be forever grateful. Thank you, Robert!
