I want to recognize Ed for being caring, compassionate, and respectful to our alcohol or drug abuse patients. Specifically, today he was taking care of an intoxicated individual that is well-known to the ED. Ed assisted the patient to get cleaned up, got the patient clean clothes, and provided a sandwich. Ed treated the patient with dignity and respect.
Though we were busy, Ed sat down and talked with the patient and encouraged them going to rehab. I feel that sometimes this patient population can be difficult to deal with, and it's easy to get frustrated with them. I have witnessed Ed on several occasions go out of his way to encourage going to rehab and have "heart-to-heart" conversations with them.
