We were delighted when I accompanied my husband to Fair Oaks (for a second attempt to reattach the retina in his left eye) to see Erica again. She had kept our spirits high during our first visit. She embodies everything a nurse should be but in my collective experiences, rarely has been. She had lots of medical things to take care of, questions to ask, and forms to fill out on her computer. I was amazed at the personal information she remembered about me and my husband. How she could "tune-in" to our temperament, sense of humor, and life experiences, all while going about her medical duties. She went out of her way to make my husband feel comfortable, both physically and emotionally. She was aware that within a 3 month period, we had been hit with diagnoses of COPD, Parkinson's, dementia, AFib, detached retina, etc. all while I was trying to cope with my own MS. Erica had the greatest skill a nurse can have-doing all her regular duties with precision, filling in when the doctor is late, being personable, and being able to look you directly in the eyes and squeeze your hand and let you know someone cares. It makes me cry to see such sincerity. She understood our dilemmas. Anyone well educated in nursing can do the medical parts, but it takes a person with a special soul to empathize at just the right level to make you feel you've made a connection with another human spirit who truly understands. That describes Erica.
