Our family member was admitted to St. Luke's and passed away after a 13-day stay. During his stay, he was seen by many nurses. One RN became his favorite very quickly as well as for the family. He would consistently go out of his way to ensure that the patient was comfortable and understood what was happening during his stay. He spent time talking to the patient to understand his wants, needs, and idiosyncrasies. He learned that when he said "I guess" that meant yes. He learned when he said he wasn't hungry, that if he put his favorite foods in front of him, he would eat. These things may not sound important but this nurse went out of his way to understand the patient's mode of communication and had the best and most positive responses from him during his stay. He spent time talking with the patient and family members about his plan of care, prognosis, test results and much more. If we had any questions, he took the time to answer in non-clinical terms so that everyone understood exactly what was happening and when. He asked not to "sugar-coat" any information and to be straight up and honest about his situation. This nurse obliged him and in turn, earned his respect which we all know was hard to earn. Communication is said to be an art. This nurse has a way of communicating with patients and families that goes above and beyond what one would normally experience in a hospital setting. He has definitely mastered the art of communication and every patient and their family benefits from it by him connecting as a human being, delivering the best practicable care and providing educational opportunities regarding their situation. He made us feel comfortable in what was a very uncomfortable situation regarding the end of life for our loved one. Even though our loved one was 92 years of age, he was plowing the field and feeding cows up until 2 days prior to entering the hospital. This nurse even checked in on him and the family on one of his days off because he was in the area. He is a very compassionate and caring nurse and deserves to be acknowledged for the extraordinary way he approaches his job. He connected with our loved one and the family by sharing part of himself with us. We are blessed that our paths have crossed.
