Coming from out of town for a major surgery on a special needs child, we were mentally prepared and aware of all the risks and complications that could arise from this procedure. Being a nurse myself I am aware of the importance of communication amongst healthcare team, patient, and family. Ever since we arrived to the hospital, every doctor, nurse, dietitian, and other providers were informed by me of my son's needs and my concerns. One of my main concerns was explaining how my son's nutrition should be restarted for him to be able to digest. Many doctors and nurses heard me but found my input expendable. His condition worsened by much due to many factors, but in my opinion, nutrition was a big factor, being left without feeding for 6 to 9 hours on two separate nights without receiving any other source of hydration, to say the very least, took a toll on his body. Nurse Wendy came in after a very frustrating night with my son's health and as she assessed him once again asked me about my concerns. Little did I know she would not only hear me, but Wendy also listened and advocated for my son. She gave my special needs son a voice which he had not had. Within the two days that he was in her care, my son's health improved by 85%, she showed caring, compassion, and excellence even in the little things (Like warming my son's formula for his tube feeds). She went above and beyond to help him and even myself. Wendy showed the kind of nursing care that truly comes from the heart, not just from the textbooks. I truly believe Wendy was God sent to us. And this hospitalization, without her advocacy we would've taken much longer in the road to recovery. We cannot thank her enough for all she did. Wendy is a true DAISY Nurse.
