My two-year-old daughter has a blood disease called sickle cell anemia. She has been a patient of the SWCC-Pediatric Dept. since she was 7 days old. She has always had a very difficult time getting blood drawn. Her veins are extremely weak. Over a year ago we decided it was necessary that she get a port placed. Her port has been AMAZING, to say the least. Recently she has been very sick and needed to have her blood drawn, it was Christmas Eve. Everywhere was going to be closed. I had two options, take her to the ER or take her to the UMC lab and have a peripheral blood stick. Neither of these were in her best interest. Debra went above and beyond for my daughter and offered to come in on her day off just to draw her labs from her port. That helped my daughter in more ways than she knows, she helped by avoiding the unnecessary trauma and avoiding the contagious ER. Debra sacrificed her time with her family on Christmas Eve to put my daughter's needs before her own. Debra is the true meaning of an Extraordinary Nurse!
