As professionals within a department who welcomes individuals facing life and death issues, it is vitally important that nurses and support staff of Outpatient Infusion/Chemotherapy be mindful and aware of each patient's needs and expectations. Often, patients and their family/friends/caretakers come through our door feeling anxious and scared, so our role as nurses, becomes more than just a person who administers medications or chemotherapy.
Jenney is a nurse who administers much more. She is the epitome of what a nurse should be: compassionate, responsible, kind and one who strives for excellence. Her upbeat attitude and calming nature have a way of bringing a sense of security and assurance in a time of uncertainty. When she explores a person's situation and finds there is a need, she is quick to reach out, recommend and refer. There is one case in particular that stands out and is proof of Jenney's uniqueness. A young family that includes children ages nine and twelve has moved to Hall County from Michigan this past summer. Shortly after their arrival, the 38-year-old father received a diagnosis that is terminal. When he and his wife visited Outpatient Infusion for the first time to begin treatments to prolong his life, Jenney begins a dialogue that soon turns into a friendship that is nurturing and special. When she learns the young family needs and desires spiritual guidance, Jenney reaches out to her own church.
This church wrapped their arms around the family, becoming a place of refuge and help for them and fulfilling vital needs. Jenney took the initiative to approach the Infusion staff during a staff meeting to recommend that we, as a department, support this family for Christmas. She coordinated with the wife of the patient to get Christmas wish lists for both the children and adults in the household. She stayed in regular contact with the family, updating them on our plans, and delivering the gifts. She was able to become a support person for this family while also maintaining a clear line of professionalism.
The professionalism, compassion, and helpfulness that Jenney displays and offers every day toward her patients and her colleagues is the personification of NGHS's core values.
