Catherine will go above and beyond daily duties to work with some of the most challenging patients that we have on our unit. She is dedicated and consistently has a can-do attitude. Catherine embodies the qualities that we want to have in a nurse: compassion, caring, resilience, fortitude, and gentle but firm direction for patients. With one of our patients, she has spent significant effort to re-engage him and assist him to organize his life to overcome his disabilities and mental and physical illnesses.

Catherine is an Extraordinary Nurse in many ways. Catherine works with me on the inpatient ward and although I am the older nurse with board certification, I have to admit that I routinely learn from and am inspired by her. Catherine is one of the hardest working and most industrious nurses I have met in my career. It is not unlike her to begin helping peers with their assignments when her assignment is done. She is also beloved by nursing assistants because she supports, cares and joins them in the completion of their tasks as well. Her collaborative approach to care, in general, helps provide better care for our Veterans- this high-quality teamwork and positive role-modeling are appreciated by the patients and her peers. Catherine is deeply appreciated and recognized by her patients because she always goes above and beyond, meeting more than physical and emotional needs, she cares for the "whole patient". No task is too menial or too hard- she is the first to volunteer to work with patients that the rest of us are challenged to connect with. Catherine excels at getting the patients up and motivated when they are oppositional or too depressed to get out of bed. Our ANA code compels us to be compassionate, respectful, and tireless advocates- Catherine is a shining example of this moral compass. Catherine leads the way in participation for committees, workgroups, precepting students/new employees, supporting change initiatives and training. Catherine is who I envision when I think of the VA ICARE values (Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, Excellence). She is a true DAISY Nurse.
