Lisa helped care for a patient who had many difficult issues. The patient had dementia, sundowners, and had difficult orthopedic devices that needed to be worn.
This situation would be difficult for any nurse. Lisa was charging during a night shift when the patient and family member was having a particularly difficult time. Lisa was able to connect with the patient, place the orthopedic needs on the patient and allow family members to prepare for the discharge in the morning. The family members left for the night knowing that their family member was in good hands and would be safe.
Lisa asked the patient to tell her stories, "My mother was also talking with Lisa like she was a member of the family, saying occasionally, 'you remember when...?' and Lisa sat there holding her hand the entire time my mother was talking to her."
Note: This is Lisa's 2nd DAISY Award!
