Brian was assigned to a young man who was withdrawn from the world and anyone who tried to break through his silence. Brian sat with this patient and let him know that he cared about him as a person in need. Brian did most of the talking but was able at one point to get this young man to speak! Brian then listened to his fears, anxiety, and struggles with life. Brian not only listened he gave him hope and strength to believe in himself and others who cared about him and wanted to help. Throughout the day Brian gave him encouragement (with the contagious smile he has) in addition to the TLC he gives all his patients.
The next day Brian was entering his room when the young man reached out his hand to "thank" Brian for his time and words of encouragement that helped him realize life was worth living for and he was willing to accept the resources and support he so desperately needed. Brian made a difference not only for this patient but for all the patients he cares for because he demonstrates and believes in the positive difference a nurse can make through patient centered care.
