My shift began with the dis-hearting news that our patient in the OR had just passed away. Since this occurred at shift change, the evening charge nurse Jill, thankfully stayed late to help me figure out all the necessary steps to take care of this patient and family's needs. Since death in the OR doesn't happen that often, filling out the paperwork is not our strongest suit in the situation. To assist with this, the house supervisor advised us to contact 3W for their expertise. I phoned 3W and spoke with Mary Michel, RN. I explained our situation to her and asked her if she had a few minutes to answer some questions I had regarding the policy and associating paperwork. Without hesitating, she volunteered to come right down to the OR and physically walk me through everything rather than over the phone. In just a few minutes I had all the orders in and forms filled out. Based on Mary's knowledge, we updated our policy in the OR to make it easier to understand the next time if this occurs. I am truly grateful for her assistance and this was another great example of the incredible teamwork at Mercy.
