Holly is a phenomenal nurse all the time and it is wonderful working alongside her. Recently, she was assigned to a young teenager, about 12/13 years old. He and his mother were in a car accident, and while he got pretty banged up, his mother suffered a spinal cord injury and was in the ICU with an ICP monitor amongst other things. As she was incapacitated, his father was contacted as his legal guardian to take him home and be his caregiver. However, this boy and his mother lived at his grandparents' house. At the time of discharge, the grandfather was visibly upset and in turn, made the boy upset. He began crying, shaking, hyperventilating, and overall panicking. Holly brought the boy to his hospital room and talked to him about the situation and calmed him down. She gave him a card to our floor and wrote her name on the back, giving him the encouragement that he has someone on his side. They left later that afternoon. The boy called the floor just after shift change to speak with Holly, to thank her for calming him down and he told her that he thinks his new situation will work out, he was scared of hurting his father and grandfather's feelings, and that everything was going to be okay. As a bystander, watching the exchange in the hallway with the upset family, hearing about the discussion she and the boy had in private, to seeing Holly on the phone with this young man was incredibly touching and humbling. I cannot imagine how the boy must have felt given his circumstance, but I am so thankful that he was the patient that day of one of the kindest nurses I know.
