I was transferred to the geriatric unit at 11:30 p.m. and was warmly welcomed by nurse Susan Wright. I immediately voiced my anxiety about being on this unit, because in the past I served as caretaker to my mother, sister, two aunts, and mother- and father-in-law, all of whom passed away on that unit. Just being on that unit filled me with anxiety. Susan's kind and compassionate manner put me at ease and lessened my anxiety as I felt heard and affirmed. She immediately notified her manager and put in a transfer request. I knew the hospital was crowded and she informed me transparently about the time frame for transfer. She checked on me frequently and assured I was comfortable. She helped sort out some confusion about a medication allergy that my doctors had been going back and forth about. She also ensured my daughter's comfort by providing her with a recliner so I wasn't alone.

Not only was she a competent and resourceful nurse, she helped me at a very difficult emotional moment.
