We had a patient come in for a primary cesarean section because she was HIV positive. The patient had a negative experience when she came to Labor and Delivery at 0200 in the morning. She arrived alone and waited in the waiting room by herself for 4 hours. Kim arrived for work at 0500 and became the patient's nurse.
Kim primarily takes care of patients who have cesarean sections and her job has a rapid turnover. Even though she only has a patient for approximately 3 hours, she always bonds with them. She takes excellent care of her patients and explains everything that will happen very well even though it is a rapid turnover. She doesn't get recognition very much for her work due to the short time that she interacts with her patients but she normal always tries to follow up on them within the following days.
Kim impressed me as I observed her care of this HIV positive who had no support system. The father of the baby wasn't involved and no other family members. She was all alone during her stay. She was completely shut down emotionally when Kim first met her. She didn't want to talk, see the baby, or speak to anyone. Kim bonded with her and became a support system for her during her stay here. Kim embraced her and began to discuss her situation and life plans. The patient was undecided as to whether or not to place her baby up for adoption. None of her family was aware of her diagnosis and she didn't want them to know about the baby. Kim could sense some hesitation on her part and talked to her about the permanence of adoption. The patient through talking with Kim about all the options that were available. Kim set her up with the Social Worker. She decided on a place that would allow her time to make a decision and still stay in contact with the baby. Kim set up revenues for the patient, contacting social work, listening and even giving the patient her personal email and phone numbers for support.
Kim exhibited total nursing care with this patient, embracing the patient through healing of the mind, body, and spirit. The patient came in all alone and without hope or support and Kim became that support she desperately needed. Hopefully, the patient and her baby will reunite due to the excellent nursing care given by Kim.
