I am writing this DAISY nomination for 3 fabulous nurses who work in the NICU, Ginny Summe, Kendra Meadows, and Stephanie Chadwick. Being a nurse myself, I strongly feel that these 3 women are more than deserving of this award. Recently, my family's world got turned upside down. We were supposed to leave for a 2 week vacation but instead, I ended up having to deliver my second son, at the gestational age of 26 weeks. He was born at 1 pound 1 ounce and was 11 inches long. Needless to say my baby was sick.
To these women I would never be able to fully express the magnitude of my gratitude, there are no words. The women gave their all to my new son, my almost 3 year old son, my husband, and my parents and to me. The compassion, empathy, sympathy and love that showed for all, made this hard journey a wonderful experience.
We were always there during the day, so we did not get to know Stephanie as much as we did Ginny and Kendra. But every night when I would call in and she would answer the phone I was guaranteed to have a better night sleep knowing that she was taking care of my miracle that night. I finally got to know her a little better after I returned to work and would show up after my shift was over. She is a beautiful person inside and out and again the love she showed for my son was amazing. She was always looking out for him in every way.
Ginny and Kendra, are our dayshift queens. I am sure at some point that they would get tired of my questions or the phone calls once I went back to work. These two women were some of the best advocates for my son, as well as for me. Because of their clinical expertise I believe that there were things that were caught early with my son, E. Coli sepsis for example. The early recognition that something was not right with him allowed him to have only mole hills to cross instead of mountains. The love they showed for my son and family was incredible and again made this unforeseen journey a wonderful experience.
In the future any family that is lucky enough to have any of these women care for their child and for them will be blessed. They might not understand it in the beginning of the journey, but they will at the end how special these women are. Again I will never be able to fully express to these women in words how special they are to us and we will always remember them. After 97 days in the NICU it was hard to say goodbye, but we came home with our baby weighing 5 pounds 2.5 ounces when we left. He is doing wonderful. Thank you ladies for all your hard work and perseverance. We love you!
