I went to the restroom and noticed one of my volunteers in one of the stalls. I soon realized she was having some sort of issue and asked if she needed help. She is wheelchair bound and told me she was having trouble with her urostomy bag, which was causing leakage and a very embarrassing situation for her.
I am not clinical at all, and honestly, had no idea where to start with helping her. I quickly went to look for a nurse and couldn't find one anywhere near the bathroom we were in. I ended up finding 1C and explaining that I needed a nurse to assist us. Several people jumped up offering to help. Billie and another nurse ended up coming to assist and I cannot tell you how amazing they were.
They showed this volunteer so much care, compassion, and grace. They put her at ease, fixed the issue she was having, arranged all of her personal items on her wheelchair in the exact way she needed them, helped her get cleaned up so she could leave the bathroom without feeling embarrassed and ashamed, it was incredible. I am so thankful they were so willing to jump in and help. I would never have known what to do without them.
