Beth was the first nurse to be handed our boy after he was born. He was stuck with shoulder dystocia for 3 minutes without oxygen and with APGARs 1, 5 and 6. She was on the flight team and one of the nurses certified (not sure if it's certified or trained or whatever) to do body cooling for HIE, which they suspected he had. I credit her and my OB for saving his life. She got him intubated and rushed him to the NICU. She was his nurse so many shifts, and she always treated me and my husband as equals - never speaking down to us, always taking the time to explain very thoroughly his stats and everything going on with him. I would find her speaking so gently to him, talking with him and holding him (when able) when he was fussy. She always kept his linens, his diaper, his clothes and his body SO clean, which as a mother, meant the world to me. She would check on him, even after he moved out of the main unit and kept in touch with us. She is an outstanding caregiver, NICU nurse and most of all, person. I know it takes a team to make a NICU work and I honor every single person who came in contact with our boy and took care of him, but I have to recognize that without Beth at the helm, our outcome could have been different that day.
