Erin was called by an aunt of one of our patients. This aunt lived in Salt Lake City and had sent a gift to her niece via FedEx. She shared that the FedEx tracking said it had been delivered, but the parents of the patient told her it had not been received. This aunt requested Erin to find it and deliver it to her niece. Erin received this call on a very busy Thursday morning when patients were flowing in all from all areas. Despite the intensity of the morning, Erin took it upon herself to begin what turned out to be a search for a needle in a haystack. She went from the front desk, who told her it may have been delivered to pharmacy, to Walgreens who did not have it. She went to receiving in the basement, to pharmacy in the basement, to the volunteers' office, to the OB desk, to SPD to the loading dock.
By noon, after hours of searching throughout the hospital, many people knew of the search to find the little girl's gift. People would go by Erin in the hall and say, "Have you found it yet?" Erin had several conversations with the aunt to try to narrow down the search. Finally giving up, Erin went one last time to the volunteer office to see if she could find something that would serve as a substitute gift for the little girl. They decided upon a "Frozen" themed Lego set. Erin walked into the playroom where the little girl was sitting in her Elsa and Anna nightgown! The sheer delight on her face upon receiving her Frozen Lego set "from Aunt D" was worth all of the hours of effort. Erin shared with the aunt what she had done as a gift substitution. The Aunt was beyond amazed that a hospital would go to such efforts to find her lost gift. An hour later, the loading dock called Erin to say they thought they had found the package. Sure enough, there was Aunt D's gift. Erin took the real gift up to the little girl who she found playing with her new Lego set. Erin gave her the second gift, making her Aunt D a true hero to this hospitalized child - two gifts in one day! But the real hero of the day was Erin Brewer, who despite an intensely busy day, took time out to make a difference in this one child's hospital experience.
Erin, thank you for sharing your many gifts with us at Wolfson; congratulations, you make us proud!
