I nominate Sabrina Harmatuk, wound ostomy nurse for a DAISY nursing award. Sabrina is well deserving of an award such as this. I have been with her at bedside on many occasions, and in many situations and she displays herself as a leading professional in her field. She exemplifies qualities of a superb nurse! She shows exceptional knowledge of the field which she practices and displays that to her patients and their families with confidence. She is a focused worker who achieves the task she is at with impressive accuracy and timeliness. All the while, when she works with a patient she is thoughtful of not only their medical issues but also those issues that are emotional and situational.
One such situation dealt with a patient who desired to participate in a family event that would greatly benefit their clinical situation by attending it off campus. For the emotional aspect of this patient's care, it was of great importance to this patient and their family that the patient be present at this event. Sabrina promptly volunteered to be the nurse who would take on that task to care for the patient off campus. Because of her willingness to aid in the patient's care in this way, the patient was given an emotional gift that, for a lifetime, is priceless for both that patient and their family.
While she deals with patients and families both, she is informative, clear, and concise as to her care plan with them at each bedside visit. At the same time, I have benefited from the willingness she has to teach her fellow staff proper and effective care of wound and ostomy issues, as well as general nursing care. She teaches with humility and is a sheer delight to work beside. Not only does Sabrina exercise all of the above excellent qualities, but she also leaves the patient's bedside having shared the gifts God has given her of kindness and compassion. You cannot work with Sabrina and miss her love for the patient's she works with, nor the continued thoughtfulness of their condition long after she has left the bedside.
