Andi Richardson took exceptional and very compassionate care of a patient and their family this weekend. This was a special case that the baby was born with genetic anomalies that the baby was not compatible with life. Andi took care of the baby and the mom Saturday and Sunday night. I did not realize until Sunday night the amount of kindness, care, and compassion that Andi was showing these patients. The baby was born on comfort care status, and Sunday night had multiple apenic episodes. The mother of the baby would call out, and I went in there a couple of times to help if needed. Each time Andi was right by their side, very supportive. But this one time, really touched me and it is what made me nominate her for the DAISY award.
The mother and father had not slept in days, but did not want the baby taken out of the room for rest. Andi told the parents that she would sit in the room and hold the baby so the parents could rest. I thought this was extremely kind. Seeing how compassionate and caring she was toward the baby and parents made me think about when I am in that situation. I hope I can be as caring and compassionate as Andi was. I know the parents appreciated her support during that difficult time and I appreciated seeing it.
I believe Andi should be awarded the DAISY award, not only for this instance of her extraordinary care, but because she is always willing to go above and beyond what is needed to be done. She is an amazing nurse and deserves this award!
