There are many incidents that involve this Remarkable Nurse, but the most recent is this. I was the nurse that followed her after she cared for a patient on comfort care overnight. The spouse of this patient had not been coping well and lashed out often whenever her loved one had a condition change. Dana was able to notice that this individual needed assistance and was able to provide support to the spouse during this difficult time.Dana took this as an opportunity to provide education to the family on the dying process and what to look for, not by simply handing them a booklet and letting them read it, but by having a discussion and allowing them to teach back. By spending time and listening to the concerns of the patient's spouse, she was able to collaborate with her peers to provide the most nurturing environment for the patient and his family to cope, especially for the spouse. At the beginning of my shift, the patient passed away. The wife had tears of relief and was comforted that this long journey of watching her loved one suffer was over. The family was grateful to have had Dana overnight, the nurse who took the time and gave them the support that was needed.
Dana is a valuable and key member on the 9 Center Night Shift Ensemble. Not only is she one of the floor nurses, but performs as Charge Nurse and takes patients; The Keeper of Many Hats. Everyone could take a page or two out of Dana's book on how to not only provide care to her patients, but to the family members at the bedside.
