I was admitted with pneumonia and immediately began receiving intravenous antibiotic treatment and engaged in a standard chest x-ray protocol. The following morning both a hospitalist and a Pulmonary Specialist were assigned to my case and ordered both CT and PET scans to assist in the diagnosis. These tests were followed by a bronchoscopy and the assignment of a thoracic surgeon to perform a more invasive biopsy to determine both the cause of the pneumonia and the detection and determination of any type of cancer- in particular, Stage 3 lung cancer or Stage 4 lymphoma. For a seemingly healthy 54 year old woman, this news was nothing short of devastating. However, my standard of care was never compromised and in fact, was a priority for all of those involved in my case.
Clearly, the Baptist Hospital of Miami stands apart from other health care systems because of the quality of care and the professionalism of staff. Fortunately, thanks to God, much prayer, and the support of family, good friends and one nurse in particular, all tests came back negative and no cancer was detected and my recovery has come a long way in the restoration of my normally positive and healthy self. It is important to me to recognize the efforts of my nurse, Lilly Feliciano, who went far beyond the call of duty in her care for me.
It is said that excellence is having talent or quality with high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution. Lilly embodies all of those qualities and more of an excellent caregiver and nurse. She moved unconsciously into her role of caregiver and nurturer while at the same time working as a medical provider and ensuring excellence in medical care. In addition to her expert knowledge, competence, and provision for medical care, Lilly held my hand when I was at my weakest moment and wiped away my tears when I could not stop crying. More importantly, however, she brought to life the guiding principle of Baptist Health South Florida by reminding me that the healing presence of God was watching over me and that I was not alone.
I firmly believe that people come into our lives for specific reasons and I can assure you that meeting Lilly and being under her care have truly been zenith moments in my life. Baptist Hospital of Miami is fortunate to have health care professionals of her caliber as she takes very seriously her role, responsibilities, and the care of her patients.
