Marion is so empathetic, you can literally feel the love she has for our residents. There have been many occasions where Marion is speaking to a family about their loved one and she becomes emotional about what the resident is feeling or going through. Many have witnessed this either on the unit, heard her on the phone or heard her during IDC meetings. Sometimes, her level of empathy is contagious, which is always a diamond quality to have in Nursing. Her ability to empathize and show compassion creates a feeling in family members, which allows them to take a deep breath, exhale and leave here with a smile, knowing that Marion will take excellent care of their loved one. One nominator said…'even though my mother is now confused, she is very drawn to Marion because of her gentle touch and kindness'.
It is clear from the nomination letters that Marion goes the extra mile. One nominator said, '….One day in particular, it was a beautiful day and Marion took my mom outside on her very own break. This was not part of her duties, but she still took the time from her break to please someone else. She is such a comfort to my mom.'
Marion has an outstanding ability to communicate with families about their loved one's condition, updates about any changes (medication, appetite, etc), explain risks/benefits…this was mentioned over and over again in the nominations. She has an ability to communicate and show compassion/empathy by LISTENING first, EXPLAINING next the situation (easy/hard) and SUPPORTING and RE-ASSURING.
I recall a recent situation when M was on hospice and his POA lived in Texas. It was difficult for this family member to completely understand his condition. Marion provided updates frequently and ensures comfort. When the POA came to visit, he mentioned that if it hadn't been for Marion's compassion, empathy and ability to keep him updated, he would have felt his own absence due to distance in a greater way. At the same time, Marion made sure she did everything in her power to ensure M passed with dignity, peace and in comfort.
