My husband was a patient at Baptist for 12 days - he has been home a few days now and as we reflect back on his care at Baptist, we desperately want to brag on one particular nurse who, we feel, was instrumental in saving his life, Mike Gauthreaux.
I drove my husband to the ER for flu like symptoms after a trip to China, and after immediate care for sepsis, kidney failure, low blood pressure, dehydration and pneumonia, by a whole team of ER angels, he was admitted to the ICUS. He spent the next 8 days there in the care of some fantastic nurses! We had the same night nurse for the first five nights. Mike was special, our angel, so in charge, so confident, watching him the whole time. He also took care of me, and answered all of my questions, and gave me hope. My husband had a lung biopsy and came back to the ICUS on a respirator, which I found terrifying! Mike showed me how to watch it, what the numbers meant, and again, was so assuring that he would recover. Many times I had melt downs, but he never wavered, and never left. I credit my husband's recovery to the wonderful team of doctors ( I believe he had six in all), and especially to Mike Gauthreaux for executing the directions from these wonderful doctors to the letter, hour after hour. I'm sure they are trained to do all of this, but there was just something about Mike that was extra special. He was only scheduled to work three days that week, but he chose to work a couple of extra nights for us.
Please, please convey to Mike, that we appreciate him, and think the world of him. God put him in our path during that very dark, scary time, and Mike knew just what to do. We will be forever thankful.

Mike was very special to B, his patient. In addition to being an excellent nurse, "he just made B happy". I cannot think of a better compliment. B just loved Mike, not just for the clinical care he provided, but for the personal attention he showed. B was going to do something for Mike after B got home. Unfortunately, B did not get to go home. B's wife wants to follow through on B's wishes and nominate Mike for the DAISY Award.
