I had a patient with an abnormal EKG who insisted on leaving AMA. Sheila took it up herself to independently appeal to this patient to reverse his decision and while his decision ultimately didn't change, he left the ED extremely grateful that such care and individualized attention was given to him.
I also had a patient with significant necrotizing fasciitis who needed emergent transfer. Sheila made it her objective to expedite his transfer and contacted Butler insisting on their prompt arrival and aided the unit clerk in getting Butler to our ED quickly and to Shock Trauma just as expediently. The patient was given antibiotics and was in-route within 20-30 minutes.
I also had witnessed an arrest patient who came in after Sheila's shift technically ended but she came in and aided in managing this patient who we were able to resuscitate and cool and transition to the CCU.
Throughout these and other patient scenarios, Sheila maintained professional decorum and kept the team unified and in positive spirits in the setting of a high volume- acuity evening. What a champion she is! On any day, in any ED, any provider or patient would be counted as fortunate to have Sheila present. I am honored to work with her. She's a true star.
