Kaiser Sacramento embarked on a journey to improve the quality of patient care and outcomes for our surgical patients. This is entitled ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery). This new process implements a pathway with milestones at specific points to improve surgical recovery and outcomes, and has initially been rolled out to a narrow patient population in hopes of expanding this to all of our patient for the best outcomes possible.
Vincent (Vini) Ilardi is the OR Charge Nurse and has been a champion of the process from the beginning. He is continuing to look for ways to improve our processes to better care for our patients. Recently one example of his commitment to high quality patient care took place with an ERAS patient that came in during the middle of the night and was to be scheduled the next morning for surgery. On arrival to his workstation that morning, Vini noticed this potential ERAS patient on the surgery add-on schedule. Immediately Vini started the process moving to ensure the ERAS protocol was followed.
Vini contacted the RN caring for the patient. Being a new process, the RN was not familiar with the entire ERAS protocol. Rather than just saying he did his part by notifying the nurse caring for the patient and then moving on with his regular scheduled duties, Vini took it upon himself to ensure this patient received the correct care at the correct time. Vini made multiple phone calls to other departments, ensured clear communication with the surgeon, anesthesia and nursing to inform them of timing and other details for this case. He also arranged for the carbohydrate drink to be delivered to the patient and notified the RN when to give the drink (the carbohydrate drink is 1 of the steps in the ERAS protocol that can be difficult to coordinate properly).
Because Vini went above and beyond, this patient was able to have their surgery and meet their protocol milestones as planned. Without his effort this patient would have not received the best care our medical center has to offer. It is my pleasure to nominate Vini Ilardi for the DAISY Award for his excellence in caring for our patients and our community. Thank you Vini!
