Tammi took care of a patient in the Fetal Health Center who came in because she had decreased fetal movement. It was found upon her arrival that the baby had died in utero. Tammi spent most of her day at the patients' bedside providing support and comfort to the patient and her family. She was sensitive to the patient's needs and advocated for birth plan requests to make the labor and delivery as smooth and memorable as possible for the patient and family members. Tammi collaborated with the nursery staff to make sure the patient and family had all the time with the baby they needed and received all the memory items possible for them to keep.
During a follow up phone call, the patient asked if Tammi would be working on the day she came back for her follow up appointment because she wanted to thank her for her help and care. During the follow up visit, Tammi spent time with the patient, providing support and care. This is above and beyond the normal role of a labor and delivery nurse. What makes this so special is that Tammi has experienced perinatal loss herself, and she is still so willing to step into someone else's pain and help them work through their grief all the while providing excellent nursing care.
Tammi Giesken always takes initiative on the unit, provides excellent nursing care, and is always advocating for patients in the Fetal Health Center.
