This is about a nurse to patient relationship that has taken place over a multi-year period. My wife has an auto-immune disease CIDP, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy and for the past four years has been receiving bi-weekly infusion treatments at ORMC. She began her treatments at ORMC's former Lucerne Pavilion, and now is at the out-patient infusion center of the third floor of the ORMC south building. During this period, Joyce Shields has been in charge of her treatments. Joyce has skills that go beyond the technical portion of her job. She has an instinct for determining the needs of her patients. In the past 4 years, Joyce has not lost the passion for her profession. Her competency and dedication inspire trust in her patients and families. She is extremely understanding and definitively has empathy for patients who have a variety of health issues. Joyce demonstrates selflessness by doing whatever it takes to care for her patients. For example, she will volunteer to do infusions requiring after-hours work because she genuinely cares. She does all these things with a calm, pleasant demeanor, no matter the circumstances - which are truly admirable attributes considering the complexity and variety of medical conditions involved. I was accustomed to being around the medical profession because my mother was an RN who dedicated herself to all aspects of patient care. Joyce has the same quality comparable to that of my mother, which is the highest compliment I can think of.
