...I probably should have written this a year or so ago. It wasn't until we started to plan our youngest son's 2nd birthday party, that I thought I should write this nomination. You see, we are planning his party, but we also plan a trip to the NICU, with a cake for the NICU staff on his birthday. We did this last year for his 1st birthday, and will continue this tradition for many years. We plan this trip on a weekend night, when Christine McCammon is working. Almost two years ago, when he was born at 31 weeks unexpectedly, Christine was one of his primary nurses. I will never begin to explain how scared I was when he was born purple, limp, and not breathing. We knew we had a long road ahead of us.
Christine was there to help pick up the pieces. Christine explained, in great detail, what we could expect over the next several weeks. Don't get me wrong, every one of the NICU staff were great. But, Christine, really stood out. It was like she became part of our family, a friend. I started to look forward to the nights that she worked. Not only because I enjoyed her company, but also because I could actually sleep when I got home when she was caring for our son.
I know if you asked her, she would say she was just doing her job. However, she will forever hold a special place in our hearts. As a mother, you shouldn't have to walk out of the hospital and not take your newborn baby with you. I truly felt when Christine was caring for him that she was like a second mom to him. She made me feel that comfortable, and I could see and feel the love she had for our baby boy. For a mother, that is an incredible feeling, and is definitely going above and beyond. What was even more amazing for me to watch over those weeks, was the fact that Christine not only provided that loving care to my son, but to all babies she cared for. She is truly an amazing individual. There are not enough nominations, cards, or thank you notes that could help me express my love and gratitude for Christine or ever repay her for the love she gave to my son when his mother couldn't be at his side. That is priceless.
