Jennifer Valle, RN-BC or, Jen as we fondly call her, is a gem of a nurse. One of our doctors even recommended that she be nominated for an award.
Jen was taking care of a patient KC, a 78 y/o male patient who was admitted to Jefferson Four with respiratory and cardiac issues. During his first few hours in our unit, he deteriorated and plan was to transfer to a higher level of care/step-down floor but there was no bed was available and needed to stay on the floor for quite some time. Jen monitored vital signs hourly and even every 15 minutes. She medicated this patient, provided treatments and made frequent calls to family since they were unable to come. Jen even added 2 additional IV access for drip needs as the physician kept an eye on this critically ill patient. The patient's condition worsened but we kept abreast of treatment changes since the physician was on the unit to monitor changes as they happened. Pastoral care department and Integrative medicine were called in to provide the spiritual and comfort needs that family agreed to upon Jen's suggestion. Ms. Jen Valle monitored and cared for this patient as if she were a critical care nurse. She cared for him holistically trying to calm him down despite his worsening condition. She followed up with bed management for bed follow-up and transferred him to the ICU when a bed finally became available, gave bedside report before going home so she could relay the course of the day to his receiving nurse on the critical care unit the patient transferred to.
Jen, despite caring for this patient, never once forgot to check on her other 6 patients, delegating some tasks but always addressed the ones she could while she was free, which was quite rare. These patients did not even feel she was caring for someone critical during the whole day and that was something which was very comforting.
We are so proud to work with this good-hearted nurse who always goes above and beyond for her patients and peers.
