Yetzabel was walking by the Physician Lounge heading towards 2 Tower. A physician came outside and asked Yetzabel if she could come into the lounge and help. He thought someone was having an MI. Yetzabel walked in to find Dr. R on the floor with his hands on his chest, diaphoretic and unstable. She bent down and asked, "Are you OK?" "What can I do to help?" He stated his chest was hurting and he had taken two nitros and 4 baby aspirins. At this time, she proceeded to call JP, who was assigned to her as her clinical partner on this day. He brought a wheelchair and a blood pressure machine. She took his blood pressure and his systolic was 101 and not able to hear a diastolic. His pulse was in the 40's. LH came to help and called a code 9. When she realized he was probably having an MI she called a code rescue. Upon noticing it took longer than expected to respond the code, both Yetzabel and JP rushed Dr. R to the emergency room via wheelchair. Dr. R told both Yetzabel and JP, "thank you so much for all your help".
He was placed in the trauma room and was later diagnosed as having an aortic dissection. He is now in the ICU awaiting surgery. The DAISY Award criteria describes an RN having skill and knowledgeable, being competent and professional, kind and gentle, caring and compassionate, patient advocate and committed and dedicated to excellence. Yetzabel demonstrated all these criteria. Dr. R was among many physicians and ARNP's in the physician lounge and yet Yetzabel did not hesitate to intervene to save the doctor's life.
