A patient presented to the clinic for a routine visit. The patient complained of bugs crawling on his skin. A call was placed to Alan Ray, RN. After Alan received a description of the situation from the nurse, it was suspected that the patient may have contacted bed bugs. Alan immediately initiated the next course of action. The patient was examined, the exam room was closed off and the staff were given a change of scrubs. Alan notified the infectious disease nurse, physician and pest control source. The patient was treated and released.

Alan accomplished all of this while he was off site. He organized and coordinated the cleanup process through facilities, housekeeping and pest control services for the clinic. He was extremely professional and compassionate. The characteristic that sets Alan apart was his willingness and determination to make sure that the patient's home was treated by pest control services.

He discovered that the family was unable to use this service due to financial difficulties. Through his compassion and humanity he wished to prevent other family members contacting bed bugs so he reached out to Ochsner Administration to inquire as to how we could assist this family.

Because of his hard work and dedication, the family was helped. He is an extraordinary nurse and because of his quick action a patient and his family were helped and cared for.
