should be Agustin: Augustin is a very caring and compassionate nurse that exemplifies exactly what a DAISY is. Augustin has worked on 5 Main for many years and has affected numerous patients and families in many ways. He is a leader on 5 Main always willing to help others. He is skilled and knowledgeable in being one of the first PCCN certified nurses on our unit and is able to perform many skills that require special training and effort.
There is a young patient on 5 Main who has been with us for many months. This patient unfortunately had a neurological accident that rendered him with minimal movement, minimal ability to communicate, and the inability to eat orally. This patient does not have a discharge plan due to the severity of his condition and has been in a hospital bed for upwards of 6 months. Augustin took it upon himself to speak to the physician and obtain orders to take the patient outside. The process of taking such a patient outside takes no less than an hour, requiring many people, and numerous pieces of equipment but he was determined to give his patient a special time in fresh air. Augustin took his patient out to the lake in a special chair and allowed him to feel the warm air, watch the birds, and smell the outside fresh air for the first time since his accident. The patient expressed his gratitude in the ways he could.
Just imagine if you were that patient and not being able to be outside and feel the warm air for months how you would feel about that nurse and not because that nurse had to but because that nurse wanted to do that for you. What a caring and compassionate thing to do!
