I nominate Cheryl for a DAISY award because along with excellent medical care she also provided a space for me to just be present in the moment. Cheryl was very supportive but did not try to fill the space with hollow platitude. She listened not only to the spoken answers, but also the silences, and acknowledged my emotions as valid without trying to change them. While others were telling me about the future, she allowed me to be in the present. I already knew I'd be better at a future date, what I needed the most was the opportunity to also experience, rather than bury or gloss over my sometimes profound feelings of sorrow. What I appreciated most when visiting with Cheryl is that I was a person with an injury, not an injury attached to a person.
