Charlene consistently demonstrates the ESJH Mission by providing compassionate and clinically excellent healthcare truly in the spirit of loving service. As an oncology nurse, Charlene not only ministers to the patient but also to the family, not only to the physical needs of the patient but also to the emotional needs as well.
An example of this is when caring for a patient with a large family who had multiple opinions, wants and needs. The day began when the patient initially was going to go home, so Charlene provided patient education and explained home feeding. As the day progressed, it became clear that he would remain and his time on earth was to end in a matter of days. That realization was very difficult for the family. Charlene helped the next shift understand the emotionally fragile state of the family. She contacted the appropriate physicians to help manage the patient's pain. Due to Charlene's sensitivity, understanding, and clinical expertise, she was able to help this large, heartbroken family through one of the most trying and emotional times. Charlene unselfishly gave from her heart, staying late to make sure the family, patient, and next shift felt supported.
