Sheila has been my preceptor for the last six weeks. I am a student nurse through Shenandoah University. Many times and multiple times per day, I have seen Ms. Hill show compassion and super above and beyond care of her patients.
One particular incident that I wanted to share as I nominate her for a DAISY Award was our experience on the 4B surgical floor on December 7, 2011.
One of our patients had just had a mastectomy. The patient was in for her 48 hour post-op observations and was having a very hard time coping with the surgery and body image. The patient was crying frequently. When Sheila realized all her patients were stable and safe, she went into the room, grabbed the patients’ hand, and allowed the patient to verbalize her feelings. Sheila not only stayed with her patient as long as she needed too, but even cheered her up and made her smile.
It is on that patients’ behalf and the fact that the patient thanked Sheila many times that I am writing this. For many reasons Sheila deserves this award, this is just one of the many times she showed her compassion, dedication and true heart for her patients.
