“Rita attended an infant at birth in the Special Care Nursery and approximately one hour later, the baby was with his mother breastfeeding. For some reason, Rita felt that she should go and check on the baby. She approached the bed, pulled the blanket aside, and found the infant limp, blue, and had stopped breathing. Rita reacted quickly and began CPR. She resuscitated the baby and found that it had a large mucous plug that had apparently blocked the baby’s airway. If Rita had not found this baby, it would have died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. What she did was very heroic, and she saved a young life.”
