Our unit recently had a special needs patient. Debbie went above and beyond to help me with this patient, even though they were not assigned to her. Debbie took the initiative to get the patient coloring books. She sat in the room with the patient and helped to keep them entertained when the patient was agitated. She colored with the patient, helped him back and forth to the bathroom, and walked him around the unit when we could not keep him in the bed. All of this when the patient was not hers. I could not have finished that shift without her help!
The special thing is that this is not unusual for Debbie. She is continually doing things like this to care for our patients and help her coworkers. She treats all patients with compassionate care like they were her own family.
I recently heard the intensivist team saying that she was their favorite nurse in our unit. I don't know the specifics why, but I am not surprised. She continually takes excellent care of our patients.
